All vehicles suffer from varnish deposits which is present in the fuel that we use. Be it petrol or diesel its there. When this burns or gets hot it bakes onto the entire inlet system, injectors, EGR valves etc and carbon then bonds to the varnish creating that horrible black sludge. As this builds up the inlet manifold effectively gets smaller, EGR valves clog up and start malfunctioning and injectors start to become inefficient as their spray pattern deteriorates. Even vehicles that have not presented a driving fault benefit from this process…if your vehicle has covered more than 30,000 miles then this service is a must.
An engine management diagnosis rarely pin points this issue and in many cases if you are lucky enough to have visited a garage that can offer an explanation, you might be offered the recommendation that you need a new EGR valve or new injectors…on a Ford TDCi these are around £250 plus vat each !!
